News Summary

A man has died following a police-involved shooting during an attempted carjacking in downtown Shreveport. The incident occurred when the suspect attempted to gain entry into a woman’s vehicle but was shot by police after fleeing the scene. Despite being taken to the hospital in critical condition, he later succumbed to his injuries. This marks the second police shooting in Shreveport within a week, as law enforcement investigates both incidents and urges community vigilance.

Shreveport – A man has died following a shooting involving police during an attempted carjacking incident that took place in downtown Shreveport on Sunday afternoon, just before 2 p.m. The events unfolded in the vicinity of Crockett, Marshall, and Edwards streets, where the man was armed and attempted to gain entry into a woman’s vehicle.

The female driver managed to successfully escape without injury as the suspect attempted to enter her car. After the thwarted carjacking, the suspect fled on foot towards Edwards Street. Responding to the situation, a police officer encountered the armed man and subsequently shot him. Despite being taken to a nearby hospital in “life-threatening” condition, the suspect later succumbed to his injuries.

More than 20 Shreveport police officers were deployed to the scene alongside at least four state troopers. Authorities established a wide crime scene perimeter as the investigation unfolded, which is being led by the Shreveport Police Department. Meanwhile, the inquiry into the officer-involved shooting has been handed over to the Louisiana State Police.

This incident marks the second police shooting in Shreveport within just over a week. The previous officer-involved shooting occurred on May 7, involving a suspect who had previously killed his brother-in-law and refused to comply with police commands.

Law enforcement spokesperson Cpl. Chris Bordelon emphasized that officers typically avoid the use of force, considering it a last resort. Additionally, there have been circulating rumors online suggesting that the suspect was homeless; however, police officials have denied these claims. The Shreveport police department is concurrently investigating two attempted carjackings that have taken place within a short timeframe; this shooting followed another attempted carjacking that occurred just three days prior.

Year-to-date statistics reveal that there have been three carjackings reported in Shreveport as of now, in comparison to eight reported by the same time last year. The rising incidents of carjackings in the area continue to be a point of concern for law enforcement authorities.

As the investigations proceed, police are likely to release further updates regarding both the attempted carjacking and the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting. The community is urged to remain vigilant as officers work to ensure safety within the downtown district and beyond.
